Rafael Nadal Wins French Open, for historic 8th title at Roland Garros

It was a historic day for Rafael, who was playing in his first major championship since taking seven months off from tennis in 2012 due to injury.

The grey, dank and chilly atmosphere that greeted the players on Philippe Chatrier Court was certainly not to Nadal's liking but he soon warmed to the task of grinding down an opponent whom he had trounced in their last 16 claycourt clashes.

 

The tennis was largely predictable as Nadal beat first-time finalist Ferrer 6-3 6-2 6-3 in two hours and 16 minutes to become the first man ever with eight singles titles at one Grand Slam.

Nadal took the last three games, ending the match with a forehand *winner* before dropping his racket and falling on his back, leaving a rust-colored smudge on his white shirt and flecks of clay on his stubbled cheeks.

The 27-year-old said: "I'm very happy, very emotional, it's a very important victory for me.
"Five months ago nobody in my team dreamed about a comeback like this because we thought that it was going to be impossible.
"I am a positive guy. I think always in a positive way. But doubts are part of this life. People who don't have doubts, it's because they are so arrogant. Doubts are in everything. Nothing is clear in this world.
"So for sure I have doubts, but I work as much as I can to be here. I can have doubts, yes, but if I don't work, it's sure that I will not be back."



 

"Thanks to everyone in my family and team. Without their support, especially when I was out of action, this would have been impossible," said Nadal. "Thanks also to everyone who sent me messages on Twitter and Facebook. They all gave me positive energy for today."
